Uncharted Territory: A First Look at the All-New 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV

Subaru is expanding its electric vehicle lineup in a big way. After launching their first EV, the Solterra (a joint effort with Toyota that recently received a significant update), and following up with the larger, Outback-like Trail Seeker earlier this year, the brand is now ready to showcase its third EV: the first-ever Subaru Uncharted. This vehicle signals a new direction for Subaru, as it’s their first all-electric, sporty, coupe-styled SUV.

Unveiled at Spring Studios in New York City, the Uncharted comes as a bit of an unexpected reveal given how busy Subaru has been introducing new and updated models, including two new hybrids. Let’s dive into the details of what this intriguing new model has to offer.

🎨 Exterior Design and Dimensions

The Uncharted immediately stands out with a look that aligns with Subaru’s new corporate EV face, yet introduces a sportier flair.

  • Color and Trim: The vehicle on display is the mid-trim Sport model, finished in an exclusive color called Habanero Orange. Subaru will also offer a base Premium Front-Wheel Drive version (their first FWD model in years) and a fully loaded GT trim.
  • Front Fascia: It features Subaru’s new six-point LED daytime running light design, with the main projector-style headlights positioned lower and divorced from the DRL element. The new Subaru logo is illuminated, adding a nice upscale touch. Notably, even this Sport trim includes the full 360-degree camera system, a feature often reserved for top trims.
  • Cladding: Subaru has adopted a more restrained approach to the unpainted body cladding compared to previous models like the Solterra, resulting in a more refined appearance.
  • Dimensions: The Uncharted is essentially the Subaru version of the Toyota C-HR. It’s about seven inches shorter than the Solterra, measuring roughly 177.9 inches long with a 104-inch wheelbase.1
  • Coupe Styling: The vehicle achieves its coupe-like look with a sloping roofline and hidden rear door handles integrated into the D-pillar.
  • Rear End: Unlike the Toyota C-HR, which has a full-length light bar, Subaru opted for a distinct rear look with a continuation of the six-point LED design in the taillights. The taillights are blacked out, and there are twin spoilers at the roof, but notably, there is no rear window wiper. Subaru relies on aerodynamics to clear water, which might be less effective in snowy or salty conditions.

πŸš€ Performance and Charging

Subaru will offer two distinct powertrain options for the Uncharted, emphasizing both efficiency and performance. Both options utilize a 74.7 kWh battery pack.

PowertrainDrivetrainHorsepower0-60 mphEstimated Range
Single MotorFront-Wheel Drive (Premium)221 hpN/AOver 300 miles
Dual MotorSymmetrical All-Wheel Drive (Sport/GT)338 hp5.0 secondsApprox. 290 miles
  • Sporty Focus: The 338 hp AWD model is notably quick, easily able to outperform a Subaru WRX STI. This performance factor highlights the “sports SUV” role the Uncharted is charting for the brand.
  • Charging: The Uncharted features the NACS port on the passenger-side fender, granting access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers in the US. Running on a 400-volt architecture, it accepts up to 150 kW DC fast charging, achieving a 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes.2 It also includes an 11 kW onboard charger for improved Level 2 charging.

πŸ›‹οΈ Interior Comfort and Technology

The interior of the Uncharted borrows the premium technology and comfortable features found in the Solterra and Trail Seeker, applying them to even the mid-range Sport trim.

  • Materials and Comfort: All trims feature heated front seats, and the materials are covered in Subaru’s StarTex synthetic leather, known for being durable and resistant to dirt and moisture. The Sport trim also adds a heated steering wheel. The top-tier GT will come standard with ventilated seatsβ€”a feature not available on the Toyota C-HR.
  • Technology Hub: A standard 14-inch touchscreen display dominates the dash. While reskinned for Subaru, it features the latest Toyota/Lexus-based software and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.4 Climate controls and the heated/cooled seat functions are integrated into the screen.
  • Driver Information: A separate 7-inch helper display sits almost in the location of a head-up display. The steering wheel maintains Subaru’s flat-top and flat-bottom design, and it includes paddles to control the regenerative braking.
  • Practical Features: The center console features dual wireless phone charging pads, multiple drive modes (Eco, Power, Normal, and X-Mode with grip control), and a large lower storage area.5 The driver’s seat has 10-way power adjustment, and the passenger seat features an 8-way power adjustment, along with two-person memory seatsβ€”a surprisingly premium touch for the Sport trim.
  • Storage and Seating: There is no traditional glove box, as Subaru offers a radiant knee warmer instead. The cargo area provides about 25 cubic feet of storage with the rear seats up, and they fold down to create an almost flat floor.
  • Rear Seats: Despite the coupe roofline, the headroom in the back is better than expected (about an inch and a half to two inches for a 5’7″ person). Legroom is estimated to be similar to a CrossTrek (around 36 inches). The back seat is well-equipped with heated rear seats, USB-C charging ports, and rear air vents, even on the Sport trim.

πŸ—“οΈ Availability and Pricing

Subaru was not ready to release official pricing yet, but the Uncharted is expected to start hitting dealerships in early 2026.

My estimate for the starting price is somewhere between the Solterra and the Trail Seeker, likely in the $45,000 to $50,000 range for the AWD Sport model. However, the unique availability of the Premium FWD single-motor model could potentially bring the entry price lower.

The Subaru Uncharted is clearly an exciting shift for the brand, prioritizing a sporty, modern design and strong electric performance while retaining the all-weather capability and practicality Subaru owners expect.
